For more than 50 years, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has tracked the most important flight made by the most important person of the entire year.

The tradition began in 1955 after a Sears Roebuck & Co. newspaper advertisement carried a misprinted telephone number for children to call Santa. Instead, it put them through to the NORAD Commander-in-Chief’s operations “hotline.”

Rather than putting the entire American air defence network on red alert at this obvious Commie infiltration, The Director of Operations at the time, Colonel Harry Shoup, had his staff check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south from the North Pole. Children who called were given updates on his location, and a tradition was born.

Ever since, NORAD men, women, family and friends have volunteered their time to respond personally to phone calls and emails from children all around the world.

And nowadays, of course, they also broadcast the live radar feed of Santa’s flight direct to their website so that millions of children the world over can see for themselves exactly how much longer they have to wait…
