08 Jan Education marketing: now there’s an app for that
For those colleges and universities still watching and waiting for the mobile market to develop, now is a good time to take action. The explosive growth of mobile technology adoption is undeniable, with mobile web access predicted to eclipse desktop access by 2014…
According to the latest E- Expectations Report, nearly 70 percent of college bound students access college websites by mobile devices, and 73 percent are interested in institutions with campus-specific mobile apps.
These figures are from the US, but in mobile apps as with everything else, what happens today in the States happens here tomorrow.
Today’s students have grown up with mobile technology and arrive on campus equipped to research, collaborate and share over mobile platforms. So don’t be surprised if one the first questions they ask is “do you have an app for that?”
Those colleges and universities that have already adopted apps are using them for a wide range of purposes, including:
- Interactive campus maps
- Searchable course catalogues
- Videos for campus tours, student testimonials, or academic programming
- Upcoming events, performances, lectures
- Transportation and contact information
But it’s not just in marketing and student engagement that apps are proving invaluable. They can also be an integral part of the learning experience, providing extra resources or even the foundation for online courses.
On an iPad especially, an app will make it easy to access materials and textbooks anywhere, and instantly connect with classmates and tutors outside the virtual classroom.
While apps haven’t revolutionised education marketing completely, they have changed the game; the main priority for university and college marketers has always been to provide an easy way for their audiences to access information and services, and with the rise and rise of mobile apps, there has never been a more effective way to deliver those goals.
